The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative¹, was developed by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in 1991 as a means of increasing breastfeeding rates, in order to decrease infant mortality. Hospital policies in compliance with the “Ten Steps” of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative have been shown to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration, and maternal-infant bonding. These steps were revised in 2018.
