When to Follow Up After Hospital Discharge

Families are typically advised to see their pediatric health care providers within 24-48 hours after hospital discharge. Infants who are having feeding problems, jaundice, infrequent stooling, or moms with sore nipples should be seen within 24 hours after discharge.

Infants who are nursing well at the time of discharge, voiding and stooling appropriately, with a mother who feels that her milk supply is increasing may wait 48 hours to be seen.

For infants who have had a longer hospital stay, breastfeeding may be well established by hospital discharge, with mother’s milk in and the infant already gaining weight. In these cases, the infant may be seen in 3-5 days after discharge.
