Infant-Led Weaning

Infant-led weaning means that the mother allows the infant or toddler to take the lead on when weaning happens. This may happen at 8-10 months of age, as the infant becomes more mobile and busy. The infant may be more interested in exploring her environment and eating at the table rather than in mom’s lap. Infant-led weaning more commonly occurs after 1 year of age. A mother who takes weaning cues from her toddler might allow the child to nurse whenever they want to, and as they lose interest, they will nurse less over time.
