Contraindications and Precautions to Breastfeeding Infant Precautions
Infant Precautions
- Infants with galactosemia type 1 are typically unable to breastfeed due to the inability to metabolize galactose. Infants with less severe forms of galactosemia may be able to partially breastfeed1.
- Children with other metabolic illnesses such as phenylketonuria and maple syrup urine disease are usually able to at least partially breastfeed2.
