Options for Supplementation

It is difficult to predict which newborn will have difficulty transitioning back to the breast after using a bottle. Paced bottle feeding using a slower-flowing nipple may be helpful to prevent bottle preference.

Infant-paced bottle feeding is intended to keep the infant from the “drink or drown” situation caused by milk pouring into their mouth. The infant should be sitting upright, and caregivers are taught to read infant’s cues and pace the feeding to give infant control of his own intake and prevent overfeeding (see figure 1).
