Pacifier use in the full-term newborn is associated with decreased likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding at hospital discharge¹. This may be due to pacifier use interfering with frequent nipple stimulation and milk removal. It is recommended that pacifier use be delayed until about 3 weeks, when breastfeeding is well established.
