Sore Nipples

Nipples may be somewhat sensitive during the first few days postpartum, but significant pain is not normal. Nipple cracks, scabs, and bleeding are also not considered normal. If a mother has sore nipples in the first few days of breastfeeding, the most likely cause is a latch problem. (See latch and positioning) If the nipples are intact, mother can apply expressed breastmilk or lanolin after nursing, to keep the nipples supple. If there are open wounds, an antibiotic ointment or medical grade honey and a nonstick covering (such as nonstick medical pads or parchment paper) are important to allow for moist wound healing1, and to prevent the open wounds from sticking to the bra or breast pad.
